What is the 5Rhythms® practice?
It is a dynamic moving meditation practice founded by Gabrielle Roth. She believed that movement could unlock inner wisdom, healing, and spiritual growth, viewing the body as a "direct path" to accessing these qualities.
What are the 5Rhythms®?
Flowing - invites you to move fluidly, connecting with your inner truth. It’s a practice of following your body's continuous, circular motion. By relaxing into your own energy, you open pathways to deeper self-awareness and embodied presence.
Staccato - brings out the power of your masculine energy. You explore the rhythms of strength, clarity, and connection with percussive, deliberate movements. Known as "the gateway to the heart," Staccato encourages you to express what you care about and stand firmly in your truth.
Chaos - invites you to surrender to movement, releasing control and allowing your body to respond freely to the beat. This rhythm is a space to let go of mental chatter and emotional blockages, moving from resistance to liberation.
Lyrical - emerges as you move beyond Chaos. It’s the rhythm of lightness and creativity, where your movements become free, joyful, and spontaneous. Like a hummingbird in flight, you embody both groundedness and expansion.
Stillness - invites you to slow down and move in harmony with your breath. You draw upon the wisdom of your life experiences through soft, intentional movement. This rhythm often concludes with a seated meditation, integrating the journey of the Wave.
What is a 5Rhythms® class like?
There are no steps to follow. You move as the music moves you. You can dance fast or slow, big or small. You are guided through the music with instructions for breath and to focus on being in your body.
Sometimes, the teacher will invite you to dance near another participant to deepen your dance experience. It is always your choice to dance by yourself or with others.
The 5Rhythms practice is intended to go beyond simply dancing to music. Your movement becomes therapeutic, a type of meditation, and a representation of your emotional state.
During class, you practice awareness of your body's physical sensations and feelings that coincide with your movements. As you move, you allow your attention to pass through your mind. Emotions are released and equilibrium returns to the mind and body.
This process of releasing emotional energy stuck in your mind and body can help you move through life with greater ease and well being.
